Summary

  • You must have an active Crematory Operator Certification (CROP) for the Refresher to be valid and submitted for a CROP renewal with the State of Ohio Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors
  • The Crematory Operator Refresher Course consists of 2 on-demand courses (Ohio Crematory Laws & Rules and Best Practices for Crematory Operators). Both courses must be completed to meet the State of Ohio Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors requirements:
    • "Crematory Operator Permit Refresher Course" means a program approved by the board that includes all of the minimum requirements set by the board in paragraph (B) of rule 4717-15-04 of the Administrative Code and a two-hour course on laws and rules relevant to this state and specific to crematory operation. The two-hour course may be joined with a program that includes the minimum requirements set by the board. "Board approval" means a program submitted to the board for review and approval that is approved by vote of the board.

      (B) Completion of the crematory operator permit refresher course satisfies the active certification requirement as a condition for renewal set forth in division (D) of section 4717.09 of the Revised Code.

      (C) The course shall be a minimum of four hours and expires five years from the date of completion.

      (D) After review of the crematory operator permit refresher course program procedures and materials, the board may approve the program or return it to the provider for revision. If a certification program has been returned for revision, the board will indicate the reasons for the denial and the crematory operator permit refresher course may not be offered by the provider until approved by the board.

  • When submitting to the State of Ohio Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors for renewal, you will upload both program certificates.

Ohio Crematory Laws and Rules

  • The course will provide attendees with an overview of Ohio’s cremation regulations and recent changes with the goal of promoting compliance in an area with the most exposure to liability – civil, criminal, and administrative.

Summary

This two-hour course, presented by OFDA General Counsel, David Ingram consists of an in-depth examination of Ohio’s cremation laws and regulations. The eight-part analysis covers the legal aspects of licensing, right of disposition, requirements of the cremation authorization, crematory procedures and restrictions, cremation of donated bodies and body parts, disposition of cremated remains, crematory recordkeeping responsibilities, and statutory immunity for funeral homes and crematories. All attendees will be provided a copy of the comprehensive Ohio Cremation Law Manual which covers each of the topics being discussed during the program.

IMPORTANT MESSAGES:

  • Credit is only provided to registered attendees participating at their own computer and phone using their confirmation login information. 
  • This course is specific to Crematory Operation and meets the 2-Hour Crematory Laws and Rules course requirement to obtain a Crematory Operator Permit.
  • This course meets the 2-Hour Crematory Laws and Rules Course requirement that one must complete each compliance period to maintain one's Crematory Operator Permit.
  • The Crematory Operator Refresher Course consists of two courses, Crematory Laws and Rules and Best Practices for Crematory Operators. An individual who currently holds a Crematory Operator Permit with the State of Ohio Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors, must complete both courses to fulfill the requirements to recertify his/her/their Crematory Operator Permit. The four-hour course expires five years from the date of completion as stated in OAC 4717-15-07.
