Beating Mental Bias

Unconscious biases are shortcuts the brain takes when processing information. These biases influence most of our thinking, without us even knowing it. Biases can be highly beneficial for making quick decisions, such as in an emergency or self-protection. In business, however, unconscious biases can lead you to make decisions that negatively impact your team’s culture and your organization’s ability to grow, be profitable, and provide the best possible service to your communities. Leaders’ biased behaviors can result in people feeling excluded, not valued, or unable to progress in their careers. Biased decision-making can result in strategic business mistakes related to nearly all facets of an organization including hiring, recruiting, and other key initiatives.
