The Crematory Operator Refresher Course consists of two courses, Crematory Laws and Rules and Best Practices for Crematory Operators. You will need to complete both courses to fulfill the requirements to recertify your Crematory Operator Permit. The four hour course expires five years from the date of completion as stated in OAC 4717-15-07.

This two-hour course consists of an in-depth examination of Ohio's cremation laws and regulations. The eight-part analysis covers the legal aspects of licensing, right of disposition, requirements of the cremation authorization, crematory procedures and restrictions, cremation of donated bodies and body parts, disposition of cremated remains, crematory recordkeeping responsibilities, and statutory immunity for funeral homes and crematories.

Mr. Gilligan serves as the General Counsel to the National Funeral Directors Association, the largest organization of funeral directors in the country (“NFDA”). Mr. Gilligan has worked on NFDA matters since 1982 and became General Counsel for the Association in 1993. In addition to his representation of NFDA, Mr. Gilligan serves as the General Counsel for the Ohio Funeral Directors Association.

This two hour course contains the appropriate depth and expertise required for a crematory operator to safely and effectively work in a cremation facility. The information covered will include forms and recordkeeping, procedures, policies, daily operations, operating cremation equipment, principles of combustion, general maintenance and troubleshooting, and much more.

Jon W. Rettig, Sr.
Jon W. Rettig, Sr. attended Lakeland College, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, majoring in business. He is a 1976 graduate of the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, Cincinnati, Ohio and earned certification to enucleate donor eyes in 1979 from the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine. An Ohio licensed funeral director and embalmer since 1977, Jon is President of Family Care Services, Inc. which owns and operates the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home, Leetonia, OH, Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana, OH, Van Dyke-Swaney-Rettig Funeral Home, East Palestine, OH, and Family Care Cremation Services, Columbiana, OH. In 2014 he was certified as a Certified Crematory Operator. 

Ernie Kassoff
Ernie Kassoff was born in Cleveland, Ohio and is a 1970 graduate of Charles F. Brush High School, Lyndhurst, Ohio. Ernie worked within his family laundry & dry-cleaning business until he began his sales career working for Industrial Laundry Manufacturing Companies. In 2003 the company was sold, Ernie then joined forces with a friend and took a sales position with a manufacturer of combustion components to develop an introduction into the commercial North American market. In May of 2010 Ernie joined Facultatieve Technologies as North American Sales representative and in 2015 promoted to National Sales Manager. A certified Crematory Operator, he has assisted in operator training programs throughout North America. Over the past 10 plus years, Ernie has designed and equipped more than 150 crematories throughout North America.
