Obituary for James Edward “Jim” McWilliams

Father of Tom McWilliams, Owner of McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston

James Edward “Jim” McWilliams, age 85, of Wellston, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2021, at his home. He was born December 3, 1935 at home in Puritan, Ohio, the son of the late Paul and Goldie Cottrill McWilliams.  Jim was a 1954 graduate of Hamden High School.

He was a hard worker from the time he graduated high school up until his health would no longer permit it.  Jim was a former employee for 33 years at McNally-Pittsburg Manufacturing in Wellston, where he worked as a contract expeditor.  Following the closing of the McNally plant, Jim was employed at Coll Auto Sales in Jackson, where he remained until his retirement in 2003. During his early retirement years, Jim worked with his son, Tom, at McWilliams Funeral Home, where he enjoyed greeting and talking to the public.

Jim was an avid car enthusiast. You could always find him in his garage re-building, painting or just tinkering on his latest car finding.  If not in his own garage, he could be found loafing at the local gas stations, car lots or body shops exchanging stories with his buddies. His love of automobiles ranged from drag racing and collecting antique cars in his younger years to participating in car shows and watching NASCAR  racing in his later years. He enjoyed attending the Grace Baptist Fellowship Church in Wellston, where on December 7, 1956, he married his sweetheart, Patty Deck, at what was then the E.U.B. Church. Jim also enjoyed working in the yard, mowing on his riding mower, and taking walks around the ridge. Most of all, he always looked forward to his nightly visits with his daughter and son-in-law, Jean Ann and Steve.

Jim is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Patty McWilliams; daughter, Jean Ann Moshier; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Sharon McWilliams; grandsons, Josh McWilliams and Kayla, Alex McWilliams and Audrey, and Morgan McWilliams and Amber; great-grandchildren, Annie, Hunter, Isaac, Conor, Braxton, Brayden, Lauren and Hadley; sister, Mona Lee Scurlock; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and Mike Hagerty, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Steve Moshier; sister and brother-in-law, Naomi and Charlie Loudermilk; brother and sister-in-law, Harley and Dora Ellen McWilliams; brother-in-law, Hughie Scurlock and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Tom and Clara Deck.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, May 25, 2021, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home in Wellston.  Funeral service will be Wednesday, May 26, 2021, at 11 a.m. at the McWilliams Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Jones officiating.  Burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery.
