Charles McDonald “Chuck” Ware Sr.

Charles M. Ware Sr., 91, of Chillicothe, died 8:50 p.m. Friday, June 15, 2018 at his residence following an extended illness.

 He was born September 11, 1926, in Chillicothe, Ohio, to the late Thomas A. Sr. and Phyllis Snyder Ware.  On September 10, 1955, he married the love of his life, the former Alice Fulton Brownell who survives.

Also surviving are children, Dr. Charles M. (Liz) Ware, Jr., Col. US Army Reserves, of South Bend, IN, Alice “Lissy” (Kevin) Barber, of Prescott, AZ, Laura (Bob) Babbitt, of Cincinnati, OH, Phyllis (Scott) Lienhardt, of Cincinnati, OH, and Dr. David (Kathy) Ware, of Findlay, OH; grandchildren, Noel (Justin) Collins, Chad (Katie) Ware, T.J. (Amber) Ware, Ryan Barber, Erin (Dan) Lee, John (Breanna) Barber, Dan Barber, Luke (Kara) Babbitt, Layne Babbitt, Leah Babbitt, Mark Lienhardt, Shawn Lienhardt, Carey Ware, Curtis Ware and Griffin Ware; 6 great grandchildren; a sister, Nancy Heath, of Columbus; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by a brother, Col. Thomas A. Ware, US Army, Ret. and a sister, Beatrice Evans.

Chuck was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served on the Board of Deacons and then Board of Trustees.  He was a 1944 graduate of Chillicothe High School, attended The Ohio State University and served in the US Army during World War II in the Philippines and later with the US Occupation Forces in Japan.  After returning from Japan, he graduated in 1950 from Miami University, Ohio with a Bachelor Degree in Business and also graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1950 with an Associate Degree in Mortuary Science.  He was a life member of VFW Post 108, a life member of American Legion Post 62, and a life member of B.P.O.E. Lodge 52.  Chuck served on the Board of Directors for the Ross County YMCA, Children’s Services, Goodwill Industries, Salvation Army and the former BancOhio.  He was a former Chairman of the American Heart Association’s Local Heart Fund Drive. 

Charles was the third generation of his family to own and operate the WARE FUNERAL HOME which was founded in Chillicothe by his grandfather, Carey J. Ware in 1891.  He joined the firm in 1950 as a partner with his father, Thomas A. Ware until his death in 1964.  Chuck has been the owner and operator of the funeral home for over 60 years.  

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 22, 2018 in the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Jason Link, his longtime friend Rev. Jack Norman and Rev. James W. Grove officiating.  Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard.  Friends may call at the WARE FUNERAL HOME from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
