Obituary for M. Esther Vensil

Mother of Carl Vensil, Vensil & Chute Funeral Homes

M. Esther Vensil, 101, of Nashport, Ohio died Sunday morning, August 21, 2016 at Kindred Transitional and Rehabilitation Care Center in Newark, Ohio.

Born June 18, 1915 in Nashport she was a daughter of the late Ralph R. and Agnes H. (Shipley) Vroom and was a 1932 graduate of Nashport High School. She was a life-long Nashport resident, living on the family farm in Muskingum Township since 1917. She was a homemaker and for 10 years she was an assistant custodian at Nashport Elementary School. Esther was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Mattingly Settlement and served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Mattingly Reunion for many years and she was a member of the St. Ann-St. Mary Catholic Women’s Association since its beginning. A proud graduate of Nashport High School, she served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Nashport Alumni Association for over 50 years. Since the age of 14 she was a member of Nashport Grange and later Richvale Grange. In her younger years Esther was a 4-H Advisor for Green Valley 4-H and she served on the election board in Muskingum Township for many years. Her faith, her family, her home and her community were her treasures.

Surviving are her six children, Lawrence Vensil and his wife, Phyllis of Dresden, Veronica Hewitt of Newark, Mary Scott of Lewisville, Ohio, Paul Vensil and his wife, Pamela of Frazeysburg, Carl Vensil and his wife Carolyn of Nashport and Alice Fulks and her husband, Danny of Dresden. Also surviving are twenty-five grandchildren, including a special granddaughter, Mary Esther Moyer, whom she raised; sixty-nine great grandchildren, including her “best friend”, Mark Bellew; nineteen great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Austin M. Vensil whom she married July 12, 1939 and who died September 21, 1989; two grandsons, Matthew Vensil and Micah Vensil; a great grandson, William Bellew; two sisters, Helen Hanby and Laura Hitchcock Reed; a son in-law, Jim Scott and two nephews, Daniel Gault and Ralph Hanby.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at the Frazeysburg Chapel of Vensil & Chute Funeral Home, 110 West Third Street. Christian Wake services will be at 8pm, or following calling hours.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30am Thursday, August 25, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on St. Mary’s Road in Nashport with the Reverend Father Donald Franks as celebrant. Esther will be laid to rest beside her husband in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
