Herschel Alton Grim

OFDA received word this afternoon that Herschel Alton Grim, 66, of Mansfield, died on Monday, September 22, 2008. He was born October 13, 1941, in Fountain Hills, Pennsylvania a son of Herman Alvin and Hilda Wertz Grim.

He was a graduate of Polk Local High School in 1959. He attended Wittenberg University and in 1965 he graduated with a BS in Education from Ashland College; 1973 he graduated Summa Cum Laude from Kent State University with a MA in Mathematics Education; 1981 he graduated Summa Cum Laude from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He took additional graduate and post graduate studies at Ashland University, Florida State University and The Ohio State University. He spent thirty years in education.

He spent over twenty-five years in funeral service and was employed at Gilbert Funeral Home in Ashland; Lenhert Funeral Home in Jefferson; Finefrock Funeral Services in Mansfield and Snyder Funeral Homes of Mansfield and Bellville. He retired from funeral service in 2006.

His love of the Lord was important in his life, his wife, children and grandchildren and family were his life, he enjoyed supporting Christian Ministries, and he enjoyed ministering to families through his work in funeral service and was very proud of the time he spent with the high school youth in service through the Key Club and Student Council activities. He also enjoyed the fellowship and service through the Christian Living Sunday School class; these members were his true brothers and sisters in Christ.

On June 8, 1991, Herschel committed himself in marriage to Kay Jean Schoonover Bradfield, she survives him; he is also survived by his mother, Hilda Grim; three sons, D. Scot Grim, M. Todd Grim, Douglas (Evelyn) Bradfield; daughter, Tamara Jo (David) Gwinn; grandchildren; McKinze Grim, DeAnna Jo Grim, Matthew Grim, Alyssa Grim, Coy Gibbons, Alexis Gibbons, Jarrod Bradfield, Toni (Derrick) Jones, Haley Bradfield, Emily Bradfield, Riley Danielle Gwinn; great grandchildren, Collin Bradfield and Joshua Ryan Jones. Also surviving is a sister, Hazel (Rev. Juan) Acuna; four brothers, Howard (Barbara)Grim, Harold (Nada) Grim; Dr. Harley (Holly) Grim and Hugh (Robin) Grim; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Herman A. Grim and son, David Bradfield.

"A Celebration of Life for the day Herschel had been Living For" will be held on Friday September 26, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 PM on Thursday September 25, 2008 at Denbow-Primm-Kemery Funeral Home of Ashland.
