D. Kathleen Reed

OFDA received word this morning that a Mass of Christian Burial for Kathleen Reed, 70, of Newark, will be held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 28, 2008. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Mrs. Reed died at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, June 24, 2008. She was born in Springfield, Ohio, on December 20, 1937, to the late John Leo and Elsie Veronica (Quinn) Brugger.

Kathleen was a graduate of St. Bernard Grade School in 1951, Springfield Catholic High School in 1955, and the College of Mt. St. Joseph on the Ohio in 1959, where she received a BA in Elementary Education. She earned graduate credits at Xavier University, Bowling Green University, and University of Dayton.

Kathleen retired in 2006 from St. Francis de Sales School where she was a teacher for 30 years. Prior to her time at St. Francis, Kathleen had taught four years in the Springfield City Schools where she started EMR classes for that system. After marriage, she moved to Newark teaching at Lincoln and Central Elementaries. Kathleen loved her time in the classroom and was very devoted to her students. Over the years she had served on many language arts curriculum committees and report card committees for the Columbus Diocesan Schools. In 2005, Mrs. Reed was presented a key to the city of Newark by Mayor Frank Stare for her many years of dedication and inspiration to the St. Francis School community.

In 1997, Kathleen became a licensed funeral director and worked with her family at Reed-Egan Funeral Home. She was a member of the District 13 Funeral Directors, Ohio Funeral Directors Association and National Funeral Directors Association.

As a parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Kathleen has been involved in many activities including the Women of St. Francis, past- president of the Altar Society, Ministry of Comfort, St. Francis School Board, and a charter member and past-president of the St. Francis Education Association.

Special survivors are her godchildren, Paula Lusetti; Michael Smith, and Kenneth Stephenson. Kathleen is also survived by her husband Richard, with whom she celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary this past December 29; her four children and their families; Monica Sue and Thomas Mathews, and their children, Reed, and Dale Mathews and step-granddaughter, Judy Mathews; John Thomas Reed, his children, Mackinsie, Jenna, and Sheridan Reed, and their mother, Alissa Reed; Mary Angela and James Riffle, and their many four-legged animals; and Agnes Ann and Michael Windholtz, and their children, Patricia, Joseph, and Nicholas Windholtz; her sister, Carmelita Marie Stephenson; many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews; and her dear friend of many years, Doreen McCartan.

In addition to those mentioned, Kathleen is survived by the many children she taught over the years whom she fondly thought of as her family. She coached many Licking County Spelling Bee champions, and was always eager to cheer on the many students that became Newark Catholic Athletic State Champions.

In addition to her parents, Kathleen was preceded in death by her brother, Raphael Brugger; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Angela and William Theriac, Patricia Lucille Brugger, and Lawrence Stephenson; and her godparents, Ed and Alice McCarty.

Friends and family may call from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Friday, June 27, 2008, at the Reed-Egan Funeral Home, 141 Green Wave Drive, Newark, where everyone is invited to share in the celebration of Kathleen's life.

A memorial to support the junior high language arts program at St. Francis de Sales School has been established with The Licking County Foundation c/o The Kathleen Reed Memorial, PO Box 4212, Newark, Ohio, 43055. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
